At 17 years old, I went to Ourisman Chevrolet in Marlowe Heights, Maryland looking for a Camaro, but ended up with this Nova instead! When I saw Nova on the showroom floor I said, “that’s the one!” $2,600 later, my friend drove it home for me because I didn’t know how to drive stick yet.

My brother taught me to drive it and I began driving it to and from work. Being a seventeen-year-old with a brand new car, I did my share of showing off. It was a little quick with the 327 v8. I did some stupid things like burning the tires and lost my license… twice. Of course I had to replace the cultch a couple of times, but I eventually realized acting cool was only costing me money, so I stopped the hot riding.

I would spend my Saturday mornings washing and waxing it before taking it out on Saturday nights. As I was advancing in my career, I started driving a different vehicle which is why the car still only has 108,000 original miles after 53 years.

I am not a “real car guy,” so I haven’t changed many things on the car; it remains basically original. Over the years, I had a few fender benders but not anything major. In 1977 I had it stripped down to bare metal, undercoated and repainted. I also also had the engine rebuilt.

Once I married and started raising a family, the car sat in my garage. I thought about selling it a few times but just couldn’t bring myself to do it.  My wife wouldn’t let me. At this point, she’s been with me almost as long as the car. I met her when I was 18.

While we were both working and raising the kids, we moved to a place with no garage, so the car ended up in a barn with a car cover over it.

After it sat for maybe 10 years, and mice and snakes got into it, my wife had someone come in take the car without my knowledge. They left a similar car under the cover and she had the car restored for my 40th birthday. That was a a great birthday for me!

Now we are retired and living in Florida where we can use the car year round. So that’s the story of my 67 Nova.. I’m not sure how it will end, but according to my wife she is going to bury me in it.
